Aldi UK & Ireland
Aldi is one of the fastest growing supermarket chains with over 1,100 stores in the UK and Ireland and is part of the Aldi South Group, which has more than 6,900 stores across 11 countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, USA, UK, Ireland, Australia and China).
We believe in delivering the best possible value for millions of families throughout the UK and Ireland, without compromising on quality. We are a global, responsible retailer, making changes to be better every day – whether that’s being greener as a business, helping our shoppers live healthier lifestyles, or playing our part in creating a fairer society, we are working to drive positive change.
We are committed to further increasing the products sourced from UK and Irish suppliers, while working with suppliers to minimise the resource intensity of our products and the negative environmental impacts of their production.

Summary
Aldi is committed to supporting the sustainability of the world’s oceans and preserving the marine environment by ensuring that all of the fish and seafood used in our own-label products are responsibly sourced. We strive to ensure that the catch methods our suppliers use impact marine ecosystems as minimally as possible to guarantee fish populations remain healthy for future generations. In order to make certain that all of the fish and seafood used in our own-label products is responsibly sourced we support suppliers to; achieve high sustainability scores, join Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), and achieve certification. We work closely with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), who support us in rating the sustainability of fisheries in our supply chain and provide recommendations to drive continuous improvement.
For our wild caught fish we aim for third party GSSI-recognised certification schemes such as Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). We also support Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP), Global Gap, and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) in order to help us certify the sustainability of our farmed fish.
Where certification is not possible we support our suppliers by helping them and the fisheries they source from to enter FIPs - improving fishing practices and management - with the end goal to achieve Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. In collaboration with SFP, local government and local fisheries, we launched our own FIP off the coast of Morocco to improve the sustainability of our canned sardines. The project aims to help fisheries along the Moroccan coast to establish sustainable fishery practices, using the MSC criteria as a benchmark.
We are an active member of the North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group (NAPA), who are driving sustainable management for North East Atlantic mackerel and Atlanto-Scandian herring through policy FIPs.
Aldi also has a partnership with the Global Ghost Gear Initiative which works to help keep the oceans clear of lost, abandoned or discarded fishing gear (ghost gear).
In 2020, we extended our policy to include product categories such as ready meals and food to go where fish is a component. In 2019, and again in 2020 we sold the largest volume of MSC certified fish as a percentage of overall range compared to any other UK retailer.
Aldi UK & Ireland joined the Global Tuna Alliance (GTA). GTA is an independent group of retailers and supply-chain companies working to ensure that tuna ultimately meets the highest standards of environmental performance and social responsibility.
In January 2022 Aldi UK & Ireland joined Project UK which is a collaborative partnership working towards an environmentally sustainable future for UK fisheries through the implementation of credible Fishery Improvement Projects. This helps us promote improvements in fishery management, protect ecosystems, habitats and endangered species all through the credibility of the MSC standard [and facilitated by MSC].
Aldi UK & Ireland also participated in SFP's bycatch audit program. Summary results can be found here: Bycatch Audit of Aldi UK & Ireland’s Wild Supply Chain.
This profile covers all wild-caught seafood sourced for Aldi UK & Ireland's own-brand seafood in 2021.
