Skretting Global

Skretting is a global fish feed producer for aquaculture and is a subsidiary of Nutreco, a global leader in animal nutrition and fish feed.

The 2023 profile covers Skretting Global's sourcing in 2022 for 95% of marine ingredients originating from wild whole fish. If the same species also are used to produce marine ingredients from by-products, this is indicated. Marine ingredients produced from aquaculture are excluded. The fishery countries represent the countries of origin (the coastal states of fishing) and not necessarily the flag states of the fishing vessels.

Fisheries reported as certified or in a FIP are MarinTrust Approved or MarinTrust Improver fisheries, respectively. MarinTrust is a factory certification standard that includes requirement for responsible sourcing of raw materials. For whole fish to be approved, they must come from a fishery that has been assessed and approved by independent third party auditors as meeting the MarinTrust Standard or come from a Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fishery.

Summary

Skretting is a world leader in the manufacture and supply of aquaculture feeds, making us an essential link in the feed-to-food chain. We apply our knowledge of ingredients and the nutritional needs of fish and shrimp to develop innovations that achieve optimum nutritional value, sustainable production and economic performance as we seek to fulfil our company-wide purpose of ‘Feeding the Future’. Our feed contributes to produce over 21 million portions of seafood per day globally.

Our ambition is that by 2025 all fishmeal and fish oil we use originates from fisheries that are managed according to the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. This means that our suppliers must be able to demonstrate that the fishmeal and fish oil is certified according to the MarinTrust programme, the Marine Stewardship Council fishery standard or participates in an improvement project with the aim of becoming MarinTrust certified. Skretting has developed its own Marine Responsible sourcing policy .

In 2021, 82% of fishmeal and fish oil originating from whole fish that was purchased by Skretting came from fisheries certified according to the MarinTrust or MSC programmes, or from fisheries that were part of a MarinTrust fishery.

To achieve our ambitions, we work together with several partners:

Skretting is member of Global Roundtable on Marine Ingredients. Led by IFFO, The Marine Ingredients Organisation, and Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), the Global Marine Ingredients Roundtable gathers companies from the entire marine ingredients value chain to drive environmental and social improvements in key fisheries globally.

UN Global Compact Sustainable Ocean Principles. The UN Global Compact has a Sustainable Ocean Stewardship Coalition that convenes leading actors from business, academia and government institutions to determine how ocean industries can advance progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As signatory of these principles, Skretting recognises the urgency and global importance of healthy oceans and a sustainable aquaculture industry, and will take action to promote the well-being of the ocean for current and future generations.

Skretting is a member of SeaBOS which is unique because it is the first time ten of the world’s largest seafood companies collaborate with science to implement a joint vision to develop more sustainable seafood production and improved ocean health. The initiative is also unique because it connects wild capture fisheries, feed producers and aquaculture businesses across Asia, Europe, and North America. The collaboration has been coordinated by the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University with key scientific partners from the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics at the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, the University of Lancaster, and the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions.

Seafood Stewardship Index (SSI). The SSI, published by the World Benchmarking Alliance, ranks the sustainability efforts of the 30 most influential seafood companies globally. Skretting moved from the 7th place in 2019 to the 5th in 2021, which positioned us as the highest ranked feed supplier. Although the progress indicates that we’re heading to the right direction, we acknowledge that there’s still room for us to do more, better and faster.

  • The fishery may interact with ETP species such as marine mammals, seabirds, and sea turtles. In the Barents Sea fishery, there are significant concerns about the cumulative impacts of fishing upon the endangered species, golden redfish.
  • Bycatch is a risk for this fishery. Gillnets and line gear can have a bycatch of vulnerable species such as sharks and seabirds.
  • The impact depends on the gear type. Bottom trawls will have the greatest impact on the sea bed.

General Notes
  • This species is also used to produce marine ingredients from by-products.
  • Certification for mackerel was publicly suspended in March 2019 due to concerns regarding overfishing.
  • In response to the suspension of the fishery, a supply chain-led initiative called the North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy (NAPA) Group was formed by retailers and processors in the UK, and has since expanded to include European retailers and processors. NAPA aims to develop a shared solution to sustainability issues in the North East Atlantic fisheries for mackerel, herring and blue whiting, and is seeking a formal agreement on catch limits for North East Atlantic Pelagic fisheries that reflects the scientific advice.
  • The fishery is now in an active FIP.

Environmental Notes
  • Bycatch of seabirds, sea turtles, marine mammals, and sharks may occur. More information is needed to fully assess the threat to ETP species.
  • Bycatch in this fishery is considered low, but available data is still limited.
  • The fishery uses purse seine gear, which is unlikely to have a significant impact on the sea bed.
General Notes
  • This species is also used to produce marine ingredients from by-products.
  • This fish plays an important role in the marine food web and so potential impacts on the wider marine ecosystem must be monitored.

Environmental Notes
  • Impacts vary by gear type. Catch of sharks is a concern. In addition, there are risks to sea turtles with this fishery, but management measures are in place.
  • Longline and purse seine gear are associated with a risk of bycatch in this fishery. Bycatch in unassociated (FAD-free) purse seine fisheries is lower than in associated purse seine fisheries.
  • This fishery is unlikely to have a significant impact on the sea bed.
General Notes
  • This species is also used to produce marine ingredients from by-products.
