Summary
Sysco France has been partnered with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) since 2013, when it became the international NGO’s first foodservice partner and first partner based in France. In 2017, Davigel, now Sysco France, became the first French company to participate in the Ocean Disclosure Project, signifying the company’s commitment to transparency in seafood supply chains.
The 2021 ODP profile covers the main wild-caught species sourced by Sysco France in 2020.
"Sustainability is one of Sysco France's 4 quality commitments. To broaden our scope and involve ourselves in the preservation of fisheries resources and conservation of marine environments, we have developed partnerships with two non-governmental organizations: SFP and WWF. Together with them, we put forward the best responsible fishing and farming programs based on international eco-certifications. By 2019, 64% of the volumes purchased were eco-certified, and 80% were classified as responsible or sustainable according to the Sysco Responsible Seafood Policy. In addition, we prohibit the commercialization of any identified endangered species on the IUCN list or classified IUU (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated). Finally, for the rest, Sysco France is involved in the improvement of sectors by participating in three Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs).
Sourcing and therefore supplying our restaurant customers with "responsible and sustainable" Seafood Products is one of the major challenges for Sysco France in terms of Sustainable Development / Corporate Social Responsibility. Our commitment by 2025: "our TOP 15 fishery products and TOP 5 aquaculture products must be considered responsible and sustainable (labeled MSC, ASC or scientifically guaranteed). But also improve on all the rest of our range.
Our approach: promote the best, forbid the worst and improve the rest.
Promote the best
- 300 references resulting from "responsible and sustainable fishing and aquaculture" approaches: these are either certified seafood products (220 references), or products from sectors that are engaged in sustainability initiatives, validated by reliable scientific data (80 references).
- More than 130 different species (including 75 species of wild fish) marketed to better distribute demand and protect the most sensitive species.
- 97% of seafood purchases used in our factory Offranville are certified "responsible fishing".
- Each week, a selection of products from our range of fresh fish is labeled "Mr. Goodfish" to promote local and seasonal fisheries.
Forbid the worst
Sysco France refrains from marketing the following species whose stocks are identified as overexploited and / or carrying risks for human health:
- Roundnose grenadier and Blue Ling
- Blue Shark and Mako Shark
- Scabbardfish
We also prohibit the marketing of fish caught below 800m (unless the fishery is certified) and the use of electric fishing, with explosives or with the help of FADs.
Improve the rest
For more than 5 years, Sysco France has been one of the only French distributors financially committed to fisheries improvement projects (FIP) or aquaculture improvement projects (AIP). For example, the New England skate fishery."
